Some Angels Have Whiskers

By Robyn Foss

Recently, my mom had to put her 14-year-old cat, Suzy Q, to sleep. My mom is an 83-year-old widow, and Suzy Q had been her steady companion since 2014. I knew she was going to miss her terribly—miss seeing her and miss holding her.

When we went to the vet that day, I took pictures. Miraculously, Suzy Q became very perky and inquisitive. Her green eyes were vibrant as she explored this new place. Mom was wearing her favorite color, purple. Because of that unexpected moment, I ended up with some truly amazing photos of my mom’s treasured fur baby. I knew I could turn these photos into something meaningful.

I started with a blanket. Using the best photos from our last day with Suzy Q, I created a layout in FOREVER Artisan®, using beautiful purple papers to reflect Mom’s favorite color. I paired it with a meaningful quote I found: “Thank you for every cuddle, every purr, every moment.”

Next, I created an 18"x18" pillow. On the front, I used an AI-generated image of Suzy Q depicted as an angel, complete with wings and a halo. Across the top, I added the phrase “Some Angels Have Whiskers,” with her name, Suzy Q, beneath the image.

I also knew my mom might have days when she needed a break from the emotion and could use a laugh. So, for the back of the pillow, I created two humorous images of my cats, Oreo and Pippa, using AI. I paired them with the phrase: “Oreo and Pippa might need your help earning their wings.”

Mom loved the blanket and was deeply touched by it. Off camera, she told me she had secretly been hoping I would create something for her. But the pillow got the biggest reaction of all. She laughed so hard when she saw her “grand kitties” being naughty. It brought her pure joy in a moment when she needed it most.
